Bowel Obstruction
Bowel obstruction is a blockage that prevents food or liquid from passing through your small intestine or large intestine (colon).
Causes
- Tumours, hernias, twisting of the intestines (volvulus)
- Faecal impaction
- Medications, surgery, or nervous system disorders
Treatment Options
- Medical Management: Includes IV fluids, medications for symptoms relief, and bowel rest.
- Surgery: Required for severe cases where medical management is ineffective.
Surgery for Bowel Obstruction
In some cases, a Bowel Resection may be required for bowel obstruction. This involves removing a portion of the intestine.
Recovery and Prevention
Post-surgery recovery involves diet modification and gradual return to normal activities. Prevention focuses on a balanced diet with sufficient fibre and fluids.
